I'm joined today by another jasmine, Jasmine brutles, who comes to us from the United Kingdom. She's a prominent British television and Radio Personality Who's also an entrepreneur and an author of thirty books. Jasmine has done a lot of reinvention and innovation, so we're excited to talk with her today. Welcome, hi, great to be here a Jasmin. Lovely to be interviewed by Jasmin. Never happened before. Nine of life. There should be a first for everything, right. Yeah, so, welcome to our podcast and Jasmine, tell us how have you innovated, which obviously you've done a lot. Even wedding thirty books is very UNMEDIAL thinking. What's people don't go to one. So yeah, yeah, it's funny, isn't it? It was like I had a production line going at one point. Yeah, I'm you know, I've been thinking about this and it is something, I guess innovation, stroke creativity is something that I have thought about quite deeply for a number of years. My sense is that ideas are infinite, they really are infinite, that there are infinite possibilities, infinite per mutations,...

...infinite approaches. You know, when I stop and really think about it, it's like a fountain, you know, and I think this is this fountain is is available to everybody. So when I say ideas are infinite, it's not just they're infinite for me, they are literally infinite. There are infinite possibilities and honestly, anyone can access them and it's almost just a case of being aware of that, accepting it and sometimes almost getting quiet enough to hear them, to feel them, to get these ideas for them to just sort of plop into your head. That that seems to be, honestly, the way I've I've worked. It certainly helped. My mother particularly encouraged me to think in terms of infinite possibilities, infinite ideas and and I've continued on from that. So you're thinking from possibility rather than impossibility. Of the glasses careful. Exactly. Yes, absolutely. I mean I wouldn't say I'm a complete pollyanna. You know, I'd like to be, I think, more positive than I am, but I think compared too many, yeah, I am. I'm pretty positive. I tend to be optimistic about the possibilities of life. I tend to be optimistic about any project that I start, quite often ignorantly, but optimists. And frankly, the number of times, you know, I've started a project thinking, Oh, I'll take you a couple of hours and it takes a week, you know, or Oh, yeah, everybody will love this, it won't be hard, and then then it's like bring out something, it's like tumble weed, you know, and you're waiting. So you have to go back to the drawing board a bit and think, okay, I want to promote this really know. So, yes, it doesn't always help, but the great thing about being open to possibilities, being open to ideas and the goodness of life is that you are more likely to see it literally, you are actually going to see it more if you...

...expect to see it. So you just mentioned something in a sence. Not Everything succeeds equally, right. Oh No, Oh, no, and I remember. You know. So, for example, with entrepreneurialism, I mean I set up my website, money Magpie, Oh, far too long ago, ten years ago, thinking to myself, yes, great, I just write the staff, get it out there, everybody read it, I'll make money. And of course not. No, didn't happen even slightly like that. And that was just, you know, complete naivety and, I think, Honestly, laziness, because I knew at the time that I should do a business plan. So I got a friend to help me write a business plan and she really knew what she was doing and I thought, I looked at the yeah, that's fine, fine, right, whatever, but I are what I needed to do was to do the work, I needed to do the preparation. So something that I have learned and I am still learning it. If I'm honest his, if you like, the the boring side of it. I am like, I'm great at coming up with ideas. I'm one of those annoying leaders because I've got it. I've got a team that works with me, and I'm one of those annoying leaders because all I've just had a thought. Oh, I've had an idea, and you can see their eyes roll, you know. And one of them mark, who I've called my big Cheez a big, you know, I've given him leadership really of money, Magpie, I've said to him a few times. I said just now, remember say no to me. You know, next time I come up with a really mad, brilliant idea, just say Nice, Jasmine, but we're going to finish what we're doing here and then we'll move on to that. Or Yeah, that could be good jasmine, but we don't have any money to do it, all right, you know. So I it's that. Feel free to speak to me like that. That's all right, it's okay, because I there have been far too many times when I've thought all brilliant, heightened and genuinely I do come up with really good ideas. I can think of a few. I think that was a good idea. But if you don't have the foundations right, if you if you...

...don't crunch the numbers first, if you don't set the ground work, if you don't do the preparation and the study and all those boring things that actually make things ultimately work, then they're not ultimately going to work. You need a mixed you need a balance of the two. I think, and this is what I've been working on particularly in the last few years, getting that balance, that the sensible side that actually makes make things work. And to that end, in fact, I now have a business consultant, Metali Chopra, who's amazing, and she is doing exactly that with me and times with my team. Going right, where are the numbers? What are you aiming at? What are the steps to get to this? Let's just increase everything by one percent. Of You, if you increase this, make this better by one percent. You make that better one but this lots of one percent. Then after a while you get a hundred percent improvement in whatever you're doing. And this is all very, very helpful stuff to me. I think it's like in the Bible, you know, it talks about the catal on a thousand hills, and I think that's that's what it means. It's those that sort of plug doing step by step, doing what you should be doing in the order that you should be doing it, and Oh, after a while, look at that, you end up where you wanted to go. How extraordinary. You've been talking in essence about going from my idea to execution, and you said it were then. We don't hear much in the business world for boring. Truth is, some things are boring, but without them we can't get ahead. They need to be done exactly, I think also, for example, but all quite some time ago. I read it. Well, I've redeveloped two apartments now and both times I thought to myself, Oh, I could do this, that and the other, I can do the painting, whatever, and then I get in. Some people there's I have one friend who's particularly good at redeveloping apartments and she brings in her team...

...and and she looks it and she said, well, we'll have to prepare it by doing this is, you know, have to stand it down, and I'm like really to to do all? Yes, you do, you do. I'd like to just slap a load of paint on and make it look Nice, and it will for a day and then after a couple of days it'll start looking all patchy because the underneath hasn't been sorted out, you haven't sound it. All that, as you say, boring stuff, grant work, you taking all this out, filling that in, standing it down, cleaning it, making it smooth, and then you do the fun painting stuff. And Yeah, I'm afraid that's all the stuff, the boring execution type stuff that that I have had to learn and I'm grateful to be learning it. Frankly, it's good for my life, not just for my business. So in foundation needs to be late right, yeah, build the building and seeing. No, absolutely, but at the same time you do need the the openness to new things, the openness to good the openness to creativity, the reaching out, the leaping forward. I get this sense of excitement when I think of a new idea, when something comes to a new project, to something new and creative and new possibility, it's like, Oh, Oh, you know, you can see I can see it in my mind, I can feel it, and then you have to go great, that's fantastic. Now let's work back from that. And some of these ideas I think I've realized they're great ideas but I literally don't have the time, I don't have the bandwidth, I don't have the money, I don't have the numbers. It may be something to give to somebody else, you know, to get let somebody else give birth to it somewhere along the line. That's fascinating. That's what drives Entrepreneuris to HMM, absolutely, yeah, I remember pross exactly. I remember going to an entrepreneur's meeting at a local university, I think was an imperial college here in London, and they had an entrepreneur, young entrepreneur, talking and he said the things been entrepreneurialism. It's ready...

...fire aim, and that's kind of, you know, he was saying this is this is a way entrepreneurs work. That's ready fire aim and kind of that's how, the way you have to do it, and I remember thinking to myself, yeah, that's how I do it and laughing and then later on thinking actually, it does need to be ready aim, fire. It really it really does. You know, once you do the ready fire aim, you learn from it. You think I shouldn't have done sometimes you can turn it around, you know, in the aim side but quite often you realize that it's it really didn't work. Therefore you have to do it again and you have to do it in the right order. You just have to the when you start with firing that part of the equation. That makes me think of jumping into water before you know how to swim. But then again, you can't learn to swim if you don't step into it exactly exactly. And you know they say sink or swim. Well, sometimes, I certainly with babies. You know you but you don't necessarily throw them, but you'd sort of introduced into the water and they just they just swim, you know, like those swimming for babies classes that they have. So it is possible and certainly can be that. It's not ideal, but you can turn things around. If you've found yourself suddenly you've thrown yourself in and you're floundering around. Actually, by just being willing to kind of stop for a moment, lie back trust, then you can find that you can float and you'll find a way of turning yourself around. And you know, if you'll trust enough and take it tiny step by tame tiny step enough, then you can find things turning around and you will start swimming. And I think, honestly, that's the situation that I'm in now, where we got to the point with money magpie, where we might little team and I will looked to each other and thought, you know this, we're just we're treading water, you know, to you, to continue the analogy, we're just treading water here. We need to you. We need to decide how we're going to really make money. I'm really make this work properly. And that's when I brought in...

...business advisor. I mean again, team's eyes rolled and she's done that again. But actually this was this is a good and they now admit yeah, actually, that was a good decision. It's it's a good one to bring it because she's got the whip out and and made a tangible difference to our income and our focus and the way we run things. So I'm grateful for that. Very interestingly, you univested money to make money as well. Right, absolutely. Well, I jolly will should, because I'm supposed to be somebody who talks about investing. Oh, I talk about money, you know, money management, everything from debt and shopping through to sort of macroeconomics. Explaining. I'm not an economist. I'm I did English at university. You know, I'm really not. I'm not really a numbers person. I'm more of a communicator, but I do explain macroeconomic happenings to man in the street. That's sort of thing I do. But I also talk about the basics of investing, basic it sort of introduction to investing. So I should be the sort of person who understands that the importance of investing anything, really investing time, investing money. You know that it's all investing. It's all slowly thinking about how to how to do things now, how to sacrifice now in order for a greater good later on. The four context we should share with the ideas that you're also personal. Fine is expert in money. MAPPI dishes out advice and to people learn how to manage their find its. Yeah, it's thing you keep on learning yourself. Absolutely, I keep on learning. Yeah, very much. I mean here I am, I explaining to people how to set up a business week because on Money Magpie, one of the other things we do is we talk a lot about how to make money on the side and then that and that involves things like, you know, expenses, keeping your accounts, thinking about how to promote yourself, etc. Etc. And there I am thinking, am I doing this? I am I doing this right? One of the things I have, I've had to learn...

...over the last couple of years, and I have say lockdown has been useful for this. Lockdown has been useful for quite a few things, is to to really learn more how to focus on a few things. Again, you know, I was saying, I'm I am like I do have like at this fountain of Ideas, of constantly coming up with ideas I use, and many of them are genuinely good ones. I think that's a good at all of that, but I've had to learn and I've been talking to myself and actually it's sometimes had to get other people to help me to remind me that I have to the more you focus on one or just a few things, the more profitable it will be, the more successful you will be in those those areas. And it's not easy, you know, nowadays, when you if you have a business, and my business is me, and fact I literally have a few companies. I've got, you know, Jasmine burtles limited, which is me, and that I've got money Magpie Limited, you know, and they dovetail, but there's are still different aspects to them. But if you if you run a business now, you've got all the social media elements. You need to be thinking in terms of PR. I have a PR agent. I also have a managing agent who gets me other work, corporate work, television work, radio work, etc. I write articles. I tend to get that work for myself, but you know, it's important to have the articles. It's important for me for my brand to be out there on the television, on the radio, online, in social media, on, in articles and newspapers. So you've got all of that pressure going plus, of course, the actual running of a business. So then you've got the account side, the technical side, dealing with it. People's sales. Sales as a big one at the moment and again I'm learning how to to sell a bit better. So you've got you know, it's a three hundred and sixty degree thing and so you're trying to focus, but then you've got people saying, oh no, you're not, you haven't got enough of a presence on instagram. Better do some more photos of the akin photos only.

So they are all these these sort of strands that come in and it's I'm finding that every few days I have to kind of stop, or even even more regular and stop and get okay, Focus. Now, what are the most important things here? What are the most important things that I need to get done tomorrow? What are the things that I need to get done this week? What are my main aims, what are my main goals and what could I shed if needed? And this is something, to be honest, I think I'm still getting my head around. I'm better at it than I was, but it's Gosh, it's an important thing to learn. So you constantly need to focus every prioritize. Absolutely focusing and prioritizing. As I say, it's a work in progress that one, but as I do it I realize the value of it. So I guess you know what these things that I'm talking about really, as you say, it's, you know, the boring stuff, the getting the preparation done, getting the foundation there, and also learning to focus and prioritize. So you know, they when you're sort of a creative type, as as I probably am, coming up with all these ideas, that's all marvelous and really important. But, as with with artist, musicians, whatever, we all have to knuckle down and learn how to get the business side of it, the daily grind, the bit by bit, step by step element of living and working right in order to be really successful. I think, and throughout everything you've shared its been clear how you're continuously learning. Absolutely, absolutely. I'm so grateful for this. And at the moment I'm I say reading, I'm listening. I'm a huge fan of audio books. You know, you...

...do the washing up and listen to something improving or not improving, you know, if you feel like it. I've got atomic habits. I'm listening to atomic habits again. It's James Clear. It's a very helpful idea that just small changes, a little bit here, a little bit, that you don't have to be put off in the I've got to do I've got to be so much better at this. are going to know just little bit there, little bit there, little bit there, a little bit there, and you know, you add it up and it turns out to become quite a big change after a while and it means that you can turn things around. So, yeah, continuous learning, continuous improvement. Again, I think continuous curiosity, city and interest. That's that sort of behind it. Really. There's a great book on rebel talent which deals the world of curiosity. Francesco Guinior Uh Huh, oh, what's it called? Rebel talent? Oh, rebel talent. Interesting. Oh, I can comments. I'm a Rabbi High Jain Battles. I'm a rebel talent. No, I you would probably definitely feed the question that's about. It's great and I do think curiosity a constant interest in in this amazing world that we live in. I mean even, you know, if you're in lockdown. I'm so grateful, as so many people are, you know, for the Internet, for four books, the radio, podcast webinars. This there's absolute wealth. I mean I don't think anybody could get bought for a moment, you know, with what there is out there. Wow, any concluding far on how to stalk can encourage curiosity to drive inovation. Yeah, I think. You know, one thing that I've been finding with with myself is, you know, there are times I actually know I'd sometimes I actually set an alarm for myself, you know, you know when you get those days when you know you wake up and it's all...

...it's all gray and the get the day continues to be gray and there's so much misery to take you down. And I'm actually Lee setting an alarm sometimes to maybe, sometimes, maybe, at once every half hour, it's every quarter of an hour, to remind myself to turn to the light, turn to the light and keep it again. It's a sort of a I'm trying to think of the word really, but it's a step by step. It's not a big glamorous thing, but just every fifteen minutes or so, remind yourself there I'm going to turn to light and turn to good. That good is real, good is is the baseline of life. It really is, and I know that there's good. I'm going to look for the good and acknowledge the good and when you do that that open thought to the good and to the possibilities. So it's not necessary, and I it's taken the years to realize this, but it's not necessary to sit in a pit and and just say everything's gray and dark and awful. One really can keep turning to the light because the light is there. Good is real, it is solid and one can just keep acknowledging that. Jasmin.
