Boxes are awfully cramped, especially when we put ourselves in them. It’s hard to do very much growth in a box. 

Innovators need to ask this question: How can I change the box that’s holding me back?

I'm joined today by under margins Doto, who is the CO creator of no more boxes lifestyle and methodology, and she's joining us from Iceland. Welcome, Runa. How are you doing? Thank you for the invitation. Guess me, and I'm doing well. I'm doing really well. So I thought of you for our innovation nation podcast because every interaction I've had with you, your entire life and everything has been about innovation, all the way to helping innovate and reinvent, and we cast the country of Iceland. Why don't you tell me a little bit more about about the they the posit Iceland or all wild innovation? Being in that flow, well, being in their fly, thing our smoothing. I think what it's such a good it's such a good topic and it's so relevant to a all of us are facing today, isn't it? The thing of everything that we used to have, or bit chunk of what we used to have our day to day life, has changed dramatically, for it's so many of us, and that causes, obviously, I coust, a lot of stress, anxiety, it causes it causes fear of what's going to happen and and what now, and and and what is mostly interesting to see is that it often can be causing stat nation and start nation is isn't exactly they think that we is going to make us thrive right. It's actually going out stop us. So the question is, how can we, in the Times that we're living in, in the environment that we're living, in our community and within our family, wherever you are, how can you turn possible stagnation and stuckness into being back into your flow? And that makes me think about actually a two things. Number One, do you actually know what being in the flow is? So so many of us don't have a clue what that means because we, most of us, are so conditioned by our gendered by a raised, by a religion, by our background, education, you name it, thinking that we have to be someone to succeed. I call it being in a box. To being in a box. We're all in a box, by the way, but being in a box that is not giving you oxygen, not giving you space to grow and expand and look at who you really are, is going to give you that feeling of stagnation and starkness. So let's go to the boxes and think that. How can you change that box that is holding you back? And I think that should be actually our conversation, because going into innovation, you need that space, don't you? Absolutely actually frequently say I take it what one not forever. I see people build prisons around themselves and it's all mental.

They do, they all do. They are so true. That is so true, and one of the things that we've seen with then, the normal boxes movement, than as we have been creating our methodology and lifestyle, we seem the importance for us to expand. I mean we have to expand and so that we both understand ourselves and we understand and we give other people space as well to expand. That Alan creates a new type of a flow, when a new type of opportunities, because the minute we start that, something happens. So two questions. Please share your definition of flow. I know the psychological state of flow, which is extremely enticing and it's a nirvana to be in, but it's very fulfilling and I will how what are the practical steps of how you start to extend, to give into the flow, so to question? Oh that is so good. The way that I experience flow. If we go first to how I experience for myself and then how I can then second let and go and how I can help your listeners to stuff to think about that, I will do that together. So when I am in my flow, it's when I forget time, it is when I just go into the state that I'm not thinking about. Basically, you know what anyone saying. I'm not thinking about. You know basically I'm not thinking. I'm just in a flow. I experience that when I am creating. I am a I say that I'm not creating being that that is really I'm passed forward. I'm very creative and I love being in that, being in that flow. So when I'm there, like when I'm helping people businesses, to look at their flow, to look at their vitality within their group, it's just something that I do quite frequently so that people inside of the group can find who they add and understand, oh, this is just how I am, this is my natural vitality and this is how I work really well, and this is how the other person is working, and now I understand that person batter. So it's like communication, all of these openness. When I'm helping them, I go into my flow. It means I see, it's like a reflection the moment that I can come into a space and I can be as authentic, as real, as hundred percent as I know I am today. And I'm saying that because I know that it is more. I just haven't discovered the whole thing. That's my journey, but I come that as pure as I can be. I feel I see people open up just because I come in with that intention. So being in your flow, you can say the feeling is my metaphor is river, a river. If we look at a river, I happen to live close to a Salomon River, so I go there for quite frequently to look at the my flow. But if you look at a river that is just flowing downstream and in that river they could be rocks, they could be all sorts of things there and if you look at you are a drop in that river and you allow yourself to just go with the flow that you might hit a rock and that's where things come you have to make a decision. Am I going to go to the right? To right, or to the left, or how? You know, there might be a little time where you need to adjust the make up your mind, and then you take that that decision and you go again and...

...down the stream you go. That's being effortless. Now, being a human being. One of the things that I think is really difficult by being a human being is trusting that that flow will take you where you want to go. Very for that. Yeah, and that's so you might have clear vision what you want, you might be really passionate about what you want to you know what you're doing and you might see that endpoint really clearly, which are all really, really good things. But then that control freak and the box that we are in that has been telling us all this is how it has to be done, and I've read many books that tell me, in order to be creative, I need to do this, x, Y, set whatever. But you know, listening to your inner guidance, because you can not quite trusting it. You never learned how to trust that. So that's where stagnizing them, stuckness, comes in. So letting go of all the how it's supposed to happen and allow yourself to go with the flow. Holy Moly, it's so much easier set than done. But my God, when that happens, when you manage to do that, Oh what of list? That's very interesting. So it's about breaking down the boxes by believing, maybe into something you didn't know, believing into the unknown. Is that a fair characterization? Yeah, I've seen this time and time again when I'm working one or one with my clients and I'm helping them manifest thing, what they're, the truth, desire, what they want to build, what they who they want to be. I see that time a time again, when they let go, even yeah, just let go struggle, but they keep the vision, they keep doing anything they can how simply think of doing to make that a reality, but they letting go of the outcome. That is powerful, letting go of struggle even. Yeah, that's a completely shifting perspective, and I'm not saying that it is easy. I want to empathize because it's not easy for so many of us because we're stuck in a box. Let's just give me one example of what I mean by that. One of the box that is is a big one, is the gender of books. Say, we say women are this and then are that, we say maybe. You say, well, women are caring, women are take collaborating, women are you know? You would say that. That put that label on every single woman out there. And what happens if you're a woman and actually you're not carrying at all and actually you don't give anything about collaboration, but you might have been conditioned to be that. So you it's an inner struggle that you have to let you're constantly facing. When that's the case and you're supposed to let go, you don't know what to let go because you're so conditions right. Same thing goes for man. Man. Oh, let's go for the stereotype of many man. They're strong, there die ract they're straightforward, their goal getters. Well, Hey, wait a minute, what if you're a man and you love to collaborate and you're such a caring and loving person? Who is judging you now? And how are you going to stay in your flow when you're constantly trying to be something that you're not? Those are the...

US. Is Our own doing. It's our own doing and it is our own doing to change that. Absolutely so. Those are the actually women, for instance, in leadership, struggle with that all the time because if they are asserted, they'll be given all sorts of negative characterization. Pays. It's not expected that a woman would be asserted exactly, and that's where I mean. You can go on and a there's so many examples. So being aware that we all do this in one way or another. Our not just doing it because we will raise this way. It goes way back into our DNA. And when we're doing something blindfolded, not thinking or not in that present moment, not in our flow, but we're judging something for something that was relevant maybe centuries ago, then that's the outcome. So we have a choice. Is that the world that we want to live in? It is that the world where you want to bring your child, whether it's a boy, boy or girl, or are you going to take the moment forward and look at yourself and think, Hey, I actually want to be more aware of it here. I actually want to change that. And the number one thing to change it, just that one tiny thing to change it, is next time you come with a statement about whatever it is, you know, women are this manner, that, white people are those, black people of that, whatever it is, use for letter word in front of the statement, and that for letter word is some from yeah, some men are that, some women are that, some blacks, others, some white that. I don't color everything with a single Russian. Always her perspective. Otherwise we wouldn't have full color TV, we would still be in black and white. That's beautiful, so true. So tell me a little bit more about your work in recasting the view of the country of Iceland. I mean it's a beautiful country right there. Everybody's clamoring to be there. The covid is this some back you talked about the collapsing tourism industry at this stay. Yeah, I'm hoping it will change. Tourist interesting blossomed when we when back in two thousand and nine when, well, actually those two thousand and eight when we had the economic crash and following that the nation got together and really started to look at who are we as a nation, what's unique about us as a nation and how can we brand Iceland, rebrand Iceland, and I was lucky to be part of one of the one of the work that was done dead basically this going really to our words, basically understanding our values as a nation, understanding what is really important to us. And one of the things that we noticed then was we had a pretty amazing and unique country. We had pretty amazing and unique Sara that we might have not have been at that time telling people about. Anyway, the end the tourist industry really really blossom following all back work. And now, of course, the tourist industry all over the world is collapsing. So now we have to think about how do we work this thing out, how do we create jobs that sustain us, that give us and our families likelihood, how can we move forward from here? And...

...there are I mean right now we're in chaos. I think in so many places were in chaos. But one of the things that I think and I heard so many people talk about. It is through the covid periods, specifically this brain time. So many people got were almost like forced to go more online, to do their meetings online, to to do, you know, all of these things that you used to do in person, and tons of people started to say hey, it actually this is quite efficient, this is quite good, I can and more productive. You know, the Rock, tons of things that were really, really positive. They the flip side of that is nowadays many people are experiencing like soon fatigue or team's fatigue or skype fatigue or whatever you want to call it, of being so much online and never having that one on one direction. Yeah, and I know that they're that that these companies are looking at. How can they create a platform where you feel you are more united, because right now, like we are here on zoom and we're in boxes. So, according to neuroscientists, this is not this actually makes our brain really tired to try to or see tons of people on the same screen and what they're doing and trying to read and all of that stuff. That's fatiguis is increasing. So it's a question of how do we use technology to benefit what we're doing? How do we do that in a way that it is productive and people feel that they're seeing both their getting nurtured? And I think, well, I don't have the answer hit, but what I might answer would be is we do that by communicating. We do that by creating space, but for different type of communication. There's a challenge that everybody is facing across the world right now. Yeah, it is, it is, but there are so many things that are changing and and there are so many things that that we could really create a something spectacular out of this. We could really create the world that we want to live in. And probably, when I'm saying that, probably the number one thing that we should all be thinking about is really be clear on what type of whole world do we want to live in. Yeah, I don't think that's very clear. And who sends the that agenda? WHO's using is? Well, you do. You know, you're so right. I always say that we can just complain about culture because we're all contributors to culture. Yeah, culture, coach is just a box. It's just a box, let's face it, just like any other boxes out there. They the big secret about them. The biggest secret about boxes is they actually don't exist unless you believe they exist, then wow, do they exist. You're correct. Any insert as to why people are clinging to boxes, why they are well, we're conditioned to be and and there are in the book that I co wrote with Nicholas Hayes, my business partner, the story of boxes, the good, the bad and the ugly. In our reasons, we found out that there are eight drivers consistently in the background driving us into a box. So, but the more that we become aware of these drivers, they could be by...

...history, it could be by status, it could be by safety, it could be different things, but they are in the background. So when we go again, I'm in a box. The moment you know, the moment you can live or the moment you can expand that box so that there are more people that can benefit from your experience in that box. Is it fair to say that the predictability of the box confers a false sense of safety from me? Yes, yes, it is about fear. It is about fear. Yeah, it's that is it's a fear of rejection, it's a fair of failure, it's a fair of of of many things that and but the reason for the fear is different from for all of us, you might be fear of not being loved. So in today's world where every organization is really trying to imagine itself with how people connect to work, everything is changed, right because, of course all it. How should they go about breaking down their boxes or are some initial steps that everyone could take that will bend, apart from those that that a little for letter work that I mentioned earlier, some which can really change a whole lot. It is about take creating space for people to to under to come together and open up some of these boxes. We've been doing events, online events as well as on locations. Nowadays everything is online, which we call no more boxes breakfast clubs, and what we do that we have a certain topic and we are just creating space for a conversations around that particular topic, and it's been really interesting to see when we start to unpack our own perception of what even a word means to us, same word can mean tons of different things to us. Absolutely always assume that when I say something to you, you're in thinking the saying that I'm thinking, and that's where things start to really be messy. But when we give that space and we start to look at who would we be if we didn't have that box and we can start to explore and we can start to manifest what that looks like, then we are collectively creating the world that we can all not just survive, we should all be there. Through that we can thrive, because the me if we if we look at the waste, the human waste, there we are always seeing by judging another person because that person happens to be a different color than you or or different skin, different gener than you, or whatever it is, and you judging them and you're not even listening to them because of that. That I call the human waste that's costing our society, I think, a whole lot more than all the food waste that we have out there, for the environmental waste that we have drave grabting list. It is. It is so by braining, you know, by bringing down the boxes, by breaking them down, we can unleash the human potential in Aque, we can unlace them. Yeah, and the first step is maybe not breaking them down. The first step is to spot them. The first step is to be aware and then, as leaders, and we can all be leaders when we choose to be leaders, as we can expand that box and we can see they and we can be tolerate the...

...things that are happening and we can expand our presence and who we are and we can be more of the highest version of ourselves and less of the lowest version of ourselves. We are creating space that innovation, creativity and new things can actually emerge into. But if we are going to be in that same box, all of us, and it's still getting tighted and tighter and tighter and tighter, that is absolutely no space to breathe, yet alone think about new things. My final thought to your audience is breathe next time. When you notice that you were going to put yourself into a box that is not serving you, or another person into a box that is not serving them, breathe in take notice when you can always change and if and when you fall into that spag place of putting another person into into a box, take the bravery pill, as I say, and acknowledge that you did, because you're just a human being and we all do this.
